First Impressions

handshake2Change is in the cards for me this year. We unfortunately lost a  good manager at work so my long time friend and shift partner got a promotion. The down side is that she will be working the opposite night shift from me.

I now have a new shift partner. She is older than me but we seem to get along alright. She reads the same things I do, likes tea, and has a sense of humor.

However, getting a new partner made me think about the first things I want to learn when I meet a new person. I always end up asking the same two questions quite early. “What do you read?” And “Do you have any food allergies or dietary restrictions?”

I’m weird. I know. But you can tell a lot about a person by what they read. Sometimes 317955_10151385891031291_856219906_npeople tell me they don’t read. Usually that means they are much younger than me and still have a lot of growing to do. (My old work partner doesn’t read much but she loves humor and random facts.)

The second question is because I don’t want to accidentally kill someone with my lunch. This wasn’t something I considered until I worked in a book store as a manager. At one time I could have taken out half the staff with my sandwich.

I also tend to feed people and loan out books so those are other reasons to ask questions.

Once upon a time there was a woman who was a writer. She was either cursed or blessed from birth to be so and there was much debate on which it was. One day a very discouraging (and not very original) person told her not to give up her day job. The woman smiled and said that was a wonderful idea. Following the unwittingly clever advice of her critic, the woman found a job working nights, which left her days free to write. Even better, the night job had an unusual schedule which packed two weeks worth of work into one, so the writer was able to have every other week off to sit on her front porch, daydream, and of course write. However, working at night and writing during the day left little time for sleep, so the poor writer occasionally went a little mad, but she decided it was an acceptable price to pay to be able to continue following her curse-blessing. Also she likes tea. :)
