Change is in the cards for me this year. We unfortunately lost a good manager at work so my long time friend and shift partner got a promotion. The down side is that she will be working the opposite night shift from me.
I now have a new shift partner. She is older than me but we seem to get along alright. She reads the same things I do, likes tea, and has a sense of humor.
However, getting a new partner made me think about the first things I want to learn when I meet a new person. I always end up asking the same two questions quite early. “What do you read?” And “Do you have any food allergies or dietary restrictions?”
I’m weird. I know. But you can tell a lot about a person by what they read. Sometimes people tell me they don’t read. Usually that means they are much younger than me and still have a lot of growing to do. (My old work partner doesn’t read much but she loves humor and random facts.)
The second question is because I don’t want to accidentally kill someone with my lunch. This wasn’t something I considered until I worked in a book store as a manager. At one time I could have taken out half the staff with my sandwich.
I also tend to feed people and loan out books so those are other reasons to ask questions.
“At one time I could have taken out half the staff with my sandwich.”
Love that line. And there’s a story in there, I think. Please write it!
LOL I have thought about it.
